Who is eligible to vote?

You can enroll as a voter if you are not:

  • Are an Indian citizen
  • Have earned the age of 18 years on the qualifying date i.e. January one of the years of revision of electoral roll
  • Are ordinarily resident of the part/polling area of the constituency where you want to be enrolled
  • Are not disqualified to be enrolled as an elector.

Documents required

ID proof:

Address Proof:

 It is necessary to present a proof of residence. He must have lived at that address for six months to register to vote at that address.
  • Bank / Kisan / Post workplace current Pass Book
  • Ration Card
  • Passport
  • Driving License
  • Income Tax Assessment Order
  • Latest rental agreement
  • Latest Water / Mobile Phone / Electricity / Gas connection Bill for that address, either in the name of the applicant or that of his / her immediate relation (parents), etc
  • Any post /letter/mail delivered through Indian communication Department within the applicant's name at the address of standard residence.
Note: If the documents, as mentioned above, are not in your name, but in the name of your landlord, in this case, he or she can sign an affidavit stating that you are at the address mentioned. If the proof of the address you are giving is in your family member's name, then it is necessary to prove the relationship, for this a birth certificate is required to prove a relationship with your parents and a marriage certificate if the address is registered to of your spouse.

Age Proof:

  • If you're between the ages of 18- 22, you need to submit age verification.
  • Birth certificate issued by Municipal Authority or district office of the Registrar of Births and Deaths or Baptism certificate
  • Birth certificate from the school (Govt. / Recognised) last attended by the applicant or the other recognized institution
  • If a person is class 10 pass (or above), he should give a copy of the mark sheet of class 10, if it contains the date of birth as a proof of date of birth
  • Marksheet of class 8 or class 5 if it contains the date of birth
  • Passport
  • PAN card
  • Driving License
  • Aadhar card

These are the steps to follow to request the voter identification card online:

1) Visit the official website of the National Voter Services Portal (NVSP)

2) Click on "Apply online for the registration of a new voter / due to the change of AC." Alternatively, applicants can go directly to the NVSP Form 6 page.
3) You can choose your preferred language from the drop-down menu at the top right of the page.
4) Complete all the details such as name, age, address and others.
5) Upload a scanned copy of your photograph along with proof of identity for age and address.
6) Once the form is completed, check the details once to make sure the details entered are accurate and then click "Send" at the bottom of the page.
7) When the application is sent, the applicant will receive an email with the email address you have provided. You can follow up on your voter identification application by clicking on "Monitoring the status of the application." It may take about 1 month to process the application and issue a voter card.

How NRI can also apply for the voter ID card? Here is the way:

Non-resident Indians or foreign citizens of India can also request voter card online on the NVSP website.
Go to the website and click on "Apply online for vote registration abroad." Complete the required details and click "send".
To request a voter identification card, the applicant must submit the following documents:
a) A passport-sized photograph.
b) Proof of identification: can be a birth certificate, passport, driver's license, PAN card or high school grade sheet.
C) Proof of address: can be a ration card, your passport, driver's license or a utility bill (phone or electricity).
